Joe McCann, IRA gunman, and his three months under the gospel

A recent news report: Former paratroopers deny 1972 murder of Official IRA man about the shooting of an IRA man, Joe McCann, brought back to my mind an article I wrote some five years ago. I have reproduced it below.

It serves to remind us that it is the Christian’s duty to speak a word for Christ whenever we can “for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth,” Proverbs 27:1.

Letter to the editor of The Belfast Newsletter published but edited

I have sent out this reply to a letter which has appeared in the Belfast Newsletter of 19th April 2021.

I am grateful to one of our readers who drew my attention to it a few minutes ago as I had not read it. For your information the newspaper letter read as follows:

Many unionists complain about Stormont, without offering a detailed workable alternative. The Rev Ivan Foster (Rtd) writes that unionist leaders were foolish and blinded for political power when they entered into a ‘power sharing’ coalition with SF/IRA and its nationalist allies.
Bearing in mind that political unionism no longer holds a majority in Stormont, I would like to ask Rev Foster what the workable alternative was that excluded Sinn Fein/IRA and its nationalist allies and voters?

Please pray that the Bible reference in my reply may have an impact on the hearts of some. Read more

The time has come

Events in Ulster yesterday surrounding the debate on ‘Conversion Therapy’ in the Stormont Assembly, were most distressing for a true child of God. I felt myself almost overwhelmed as I read the news reports of the debate and the accompanying interviews and statements by so-called religious leaders.

This morning I read several portions of God’s Word including 2 Timothy chapter 4. At the beginning of that chapter I read the following verses.

“I charge [thee] therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away [their] ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry,” 2Timothy 4:1-5.

Three things were impressed upon my heart.

1. It was the duty of a minister to go on contending with the wickedness of the day, no matter how distressing and overwhelming it appears to be!

2. I must do my best, despite advancing years, to meet that obligation.

3. It occurred to me that I could produce an audio response to the ongoing attacks of the devil. That would ease the problems with mounting written articles on my site and likely make it easier for our supporters since they can listen while doing other things which they could not do if attempting to take in a written article.

Out of these considerations has come a decision to produce audio reports which I can circulate by email in the manner by which I send out sermons and school assembly talks.

I am going to name the reports – THE ‘TIME’ HAS COME. You can see that it springs from Paul’s words: ‘the time will come’, in verse 3. What he said would come has now undoubtedly come!

I trust that this little venture will prove a blessing to you all and also make it easy for you to pass on to others the Bible’s response to the abounding errors of today.

Gay conversion ban

I have hastened to write this article in response to the report of today’s debate in Stormont on the subject of ‘Conversion Therapy’. The position taken by the Free Presbyterian Church on this issue was set forth in an email circulated before the debate.

“At stake is the basic teaching on conversion to Christ. The motion before the Assembly does not define what conversion therapy is. The term conversion therapy is left deliberately broad by LGBT activists. There could be a move to count praying with someone who has asked for prayer on these matters as “conversion therapy”

The BBC report of the debate is most disturbing for it is clear that there is error both on the side of those opposing “conversion therapy”. and the DUP who is supposed to be defending gospel liberty.

As I say at the end of the article: “What darkness has descended upon our Province, once seen as a bastion of gospel truth. It is that no more!”
Please pray that this article will be read and do what you can to circulate it abroad. Read more

MLA Jim Allister speaking against 'Gay Conversion' ban

Mr Jim Allister QC, MLA, (leader of the Traditional Unionist Voice party) speaking during the debate in the Stormont Assembly, Belfast on 20th April, where he opposed a motion to ‘Ban Conversion Therapy – in all its forms’, proposed by members of the Ulster Unionist Party. It was passed with the support of Sinn Fein/IRA and other Nationalists members.

There is a supportive intervention by Mr Jim Wells MLA.

The terms of this motion must be seen to include a call for a ban on the preaching of the gospel in its fulness!

An ‘educated eejit’

Were the renowned evangelist, W P Nicholson, still alive I have no doubt he would have applied the epithet he so often used of those he upbraided for their modernistic attacks upon the Word of God with their ‘so-called’ advanced scientific knowledge and views, against Sir David Attenborough.

I cerainly will use that same nickname of the well known and much admired English broadcaster and natural historian. His television programmes are exceedingly interesting though blighted and spoiled by his oft-stated and laughable atheistic and evolutionary views.

The BBC has announced a new documentary by him. The announcement has the headline: Sir David Attenborough’s New Doc: ‘Humans Are Intruders’. Read more

Direct action

By George H Fromow, The first Secretary of the Sovereign Grace Advent testimony. (This article is taken from Watching and Waiting, October, 1919 and reprinted in the January-March 2019 edition).

I’m reprinting this article (written in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, the Second World War and the resultant chaos amongst the nations) for it deals with the issue of governmental authority and the Christian’s response.

This is a topic under discussion today in the wake of the Covid Restrictions. Some ill-informed Christian ministers and pastors say these restrictions are to be rejected and resisted by believers. They declare such a restriction is an attack upon gospel freedom and the right to worship when in truth it is no such thing.

The restrictions do not target Christians specifically but all gatherings which lead to the spread of the Covid-19 virus. It is hardly an attack upon Christian liberty to close pubs, dance halls and cinemas in a bid to hinder the spread of the virus!

In truth, the innovations of online videoing of church services has proved to be an means of reaching even more hearers than was the case before the restrictions. Such is the wise and merciful Providence of God. Read more

Reply to letter in the 'Belfast Newsletter'

On Monday, April 12th, I sent the following letter to the Editor of the ‘Belfast Newsletter.’

It has now appeared in today’s (April 16th) edition.

Mr Editor,

May I offer one comment on the letter from Mr Tom Ekin – “We still support politicians whose man (sic) achievements are sectarianism and failure to progress.”

He asks – “Why do we not elect politicians who will put the constitutional position on the back burner until we get Northern Ireland to being a better run place, with better education, better welfare, better jobs for more people, and less criminality?”

That will sound so winsome and politically appealing to some! But it is most foolish. It reminds me of the little boy who recently lost his finger as a result of being allowed to stroke a lovely wee monkey in a zoo! If we forget the true nature of Sinn Fein/IRA then we stand to lose more than a finger!

What Mr Ekin suggests is like asking the captain of a ship in the midst of a sea battle to cease responding to the attacks of enemy vessels while he attends to the problems that the enemy attacks have created on his vessel?

Oftentimes ships are so damaged by enemy attacks that they must withdraw from the battle scene but as they do so they CONTINUE to mount what defence they can in response to the continued attacks of the enemy, for those assaults have not ended.

I fear such sentiments indicate a total lack of understanding just what the enemies of Ulster’s constitutional existence are seeking to do.
There is not a contest between two political ideologies taking place in Ulster! No, Sinn Fein/IRA and its nationalist allies are seeking the DESTRUCTION of Northern Ireland, not a change in the social policies which are in force within it.

Hitler was not seeking social change in the United Kingdom by his bombing of it but rather its destruction and absorption in to his ‘Nazi Empire’!

Sinn Fein/IRA have a similar objective regarding Northern Ireland. How foolish and blinded by a desire for political power were our Unionist leaders when they entered into a ‘power-sharing’ coalition with those bent on the destruction of Northern Ireland!

Let us never forget the true nature of what is taking place in our land!

Sincerely,

Rev Ivan Foster (Rtd)

Men (and women) without the Bible have no answer to life’s perplexities!

A news site reported on April 5th that: “During Monday morning’s Good Morning Britain, host Kate Garraway spoke with Bishop Rose Hudson-Wilkin about the pandemic and questioned why a God could even allow it to happen in the first place. “How could a God allow this to happen to the world, have you had that?” Kate asked the Bishop when discussing the questions she may have faced over the past year.

Bishop Hudson-Wilkin replied: “That’s a tough one and we hear it all the time when there’s a natural disaster or when someone has done something terrible.

“The feedback has always been ‘If God is really there, why did he allow…?’

“And, when we say that we actually forget that we have the freedom.”

And there you have it! That was the answer of this female masquerading as a bishop in an office that the Word of God states should not be occupied by a woman! Read more

Owen Polley: It is no surprise that the funeral of the IRA thug Bobby Storey escaped even a caution

On Tuesday, the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) announced that it will not prosecute republicans for breaches of coronavirus rules at the funeral of the IRA thug, Bobby Storey.

By Owen Polley, Belfast Newsletter Thursday, 1st April 2021, 12:57 pm

Is there anybody in Northern Ireland who is surprised by this decision?

In the immediate aftermath of the funeral, I wrote in this newspaper that “there is one rule in Northern Ireland for republicans and one for everybody else”. Read more

An ‘evangellyfish’ indeed

Dr Hamilton is fondly and mistakenly considered by many ‘evangelicals’ to be an ‘evangelical’!

In truth, he is what used to be referred to amongst us as an ‘evangellyfish’!

The ‘evangelicalness’ of him and his ilk can be gauged by the fact that he is happy to stay in an apostate church which embraces, to a very large degree, every spiritual and moral perversion abroad today!

Here we see him rejoicing over a letter from one whose predecessors were known as ‘antichrists’ for hundreds of years by his church, the Presbyterian Church in Ireland! That ended in 1988 when the PCI removed from the ‘Westminster Confession of Faith’ the Biblical definition of the true character of pope and popery. Read more

The Christian, public worship and government health orders

An article by Rev. Andy Foster, Penticton Free Presbyterian Church

The Covid-19 crisis that has shaken the world for many months now has had a profound impact on the life of the Church of Christ. Christians have wrestled particularly with the restrictions that government authorities at various levels in society have placed upon their public assemblies for worship.

The interface between political and spiritual affairs is particularly controversial. However, the child of God must learn to distinguish between a Biblical, spiritual response and a political reaction to these things. The Christian will find that there are legislative issues they can oppose from a political perspective but must submit to for spiritual reasons. It is easy to confuse these two reactions. I fear that many have adopted a political position with regard to the government’s public health orders but have presented it as being a spiritual response. I am concerned that many Christians who defy their government’s health orders do so out of a carnal rebellious spirit that simply indicates they resent being told what to do. Read more

Three stops on the Saviour’s path to his atoning death

“When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. . . . . . And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha . . . . Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand,” John 19:13, 17, 41-42.

When I read this chapter a few days ago, I was carried back to my first year as a Christian. I sat in old Ravenhill Free Presbyterian Church in a meeting at which the late Pastor Willie Mullan was preaching. He took us to this chapter and dealt with its contents in a most innovative and thrilling manner. I have never forgotten the gist of what he said.

It came back to me as I read the chapter and I happily put down these thoughts, which doubtlessly owe a lot to what I heard back then, some 57 years ago! Read more
