A LOOK BACK AT THE PAST

Continuing Stedfast

Kilskeery Communion Service, October 25th, 2015.

“Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers,” Acts 2:41-42.

As we receive four young people into membership today the question – “What is a Christian” is worthy of consideration.

The answer is given by the greatest of all authorities, the Lord Jesus Christ.

“And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple,” Luke 14:25-27.

Folly. There have been those who have foolishly stated that there is ‘no other qualification for membership of and fellowship in the Church of Christ than being born again.’ I believe that such a notion is wrong and is born of a desire to widen the “strait gate” and broaden the “narrow way” referred to by the Saviour in Matthew 7:13-14.

THE DISCIPLE’S PRAYER

Commonly called ‘The Lord’s Prayer.’

(A series of studies based upon messages preached by Rev Ivan Foster, in Kilskeery Free Presbyterian Church in 1987 and presently being repeated in the Young People’s Fellowship meetings in the church)

The Preface to the Prayer – “Our Father which art in heaven” , Matthew 6:9.

I think it profitable to point out that though this prayer is commonly called ‘The Lord’s Prayer’, it is in truth a disciple’s prayer. Our Saviour could never have prayed a prayer, at the heart of which was a confession of sin and a seeking of forgiveness. The Lord Jesus is our Great High Priest Who is “without sin,” Hebrews 4:15. Read more

Can we know the time of Christ’s return?

To many Christians the concept that God’s people may understand the timing of Christ’s return seems to be an heretical notion. The words of Christ are often cited in support. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only, Matt 24:36. Yet these words emphatically do not mean that God’s people will be ignorant of when Christ will appear. In fact, the saints living in the time leading up to that return and who study the Scriptural teaching on Christ’s return will have a very clear idea of when Christ will return – just like Noah knew when the flood was coming!

Below is a recording of a prayer meeting message preached by Rev. Andy Foster, as part of an ongoing series of studies in Matthew 24 & 25, which deals with this matter.

Kilskeery Annual Autumn Conference

Conference Theme: “IN DEFENCE OF PROPHETIC TRUTH”

Friday 30th October 7.30 pm

“The united testimony of Scripture”
Preacher : Rev Gordon Dane (Crossgar FPC)

Saturday 31st October 7.30 pm

“The truth maintained from the apostles until now”
Preacher : Rev Brian McClung (Newtownabbey FPC)

Lord’s Day 1st November

11.30 am: “The Testimony of the prophets & apostles”
7.00 pm: “The Testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ”
Preacher : Mr Stephen Toms
(Secretary of the Sovereign Grace Advent Testimony)

  • The central purpose of our conference is to set forth the TEACHING of the BIBLE
    on the subject of prophecy.
  • It is what God’s Word says and not what great men in the past may have said on this matter, for they were but men and were fallible.
  • “The word of God, as contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments,
is the only infallible rule of faith and practice.”
  • Therefore our messages are nothing but simple expositions of God’s prophetic Scriptures, rather than a setting forth of the opinions of men.

Protests at the Papal Antichrist’s Visit to USA

The following is a report with links to videos by a brother, Sean Cummings.

This brother is unknown to me but I present his report for it is encouraging to know that there are those ready and willing to undertake the daunting task of entering into a large multitude of fervent Romanists who would not welcome such a witness.

May the Lord bless this effort and honour the distribution of His Word amongst the poor sinners gathered to honour a man the Westminster Confession of Faith rightly calls: “There is no other head of the Church, but the Lord Jesus Christ; nor can the Pope of Rome, in any sense, be head thereof; but is that Antichrist, that man of sin, and son of perdition, that exalteth himself, in the Church. against Christ and all that is called God.” (Chapter XXV, paragraph VI.)

Rev Ivan Foster.

Brethren,

Here is a brief recap of how the evangelism went during the pope’s visit to Washington DC and Philadelphia this past week.  We praise God that He gave us utterance of the gospel, He enabled His word to go out with power and little to no oppression, and that He gave us boldness to share so much of what is wrong with Romanism.  He also kept us safe in the face of adversity.  In Washington DC, we found out that on Wednesday that undercover cops had been assigned to us to ensure our safety, and in Philadelphia on Saturday, six cops walked us back to our hotel.

(One of the videos included in the report is below. There are links to more videos in the full report)

“ALL CHRISTIANS TO ACTION STATIONS!! ”

Part 9: A glorious doxology

roman_soldierAn outline study of Jude – an important little book for today, by Rev Ivan Foster.

“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen,” Jude 24-25.

As this call to arms comes to an end, it is most significant that it concludes with one of the most noble, most glorious most relevant doxologies in the Bible. Here is a profoundly wonderful elevating of God and that in terms so marvellously relevant to the subject matter the apostle has been dealing with.

Here is a glorious note to conclude an urgent appeal to beware of the creeping destructiveness of apostasy: “Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling.” While Jude sought to arouse believers to the danger of those who would sow the seeds of detestable error which would lead to a turning from God and a falling away, his fiñnal words extol the power of our God to keep His flock.

Report of the Free Presbyterian gospel witness at the National Ploughing Championships in Ratheniska, County Laois, Republic of Ireland

Rev Larry Power, Interim Moderator of Kilskeery Free Presbyterian Church, reports on the three-day gospel outreach at the ploughing championships in Co. Laois, of which he was an outreach team member.

There were some 281,000 people attended the three day event with 1500 exhibitors. The Free Presbyterian team gave out some 35,000 gospel calendars, had about 1200 people (judging by the cups of tea given out) calling into the gospel marquee for literature and oftentimes to talk about spiritual things. Some 230 New Testaments and 220 Bibles were given out upon request.

Please pray for each item of literature thus distributed to people who came from all parts of Ireland and, it has to be said, by and large received graciously and courteously by the people. Many of those contacted spoke of their previous visits in former years and mentioned that they still had the gospel calendar received then.

The front of the calendar distributed this year.

Pictures of Christ series

Rev. Ivan FosterRev. Foster has begun a new series of studies in Kilskeery Independent Christian School morning assemblies in which he deals with the theme, “Pictures of Christ in the Bible”, the descriptions and types of Christ given in the Scriptures. You can listen to these studies using the player below. Future developments in Iraq

The substance of a message preached in Kilskeery Free Presbyterian Church, Lord’s Day evening, 10th March, 1991 by Rev Ivan Foster.

There are basically two schools of thought regarding what the Bible has to say about the future of the ancient city of Babylon.

There has been a city of Babylon from the very earliest times. “And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.” Genesis 10:10
“So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.” Genesis 11:8-9.

It became a city of great prominence in the time of Nebuchadnezzar. It, rather than Nineveh, became the city of Assyria. The city is now in ruins.

Suicide – a despairing leap into the dark.

Two things have prompted me to mount these notes which are the substance of a sermon I preached in Kilskeery Free Presbyterian Church on March 16th, 2008.

First of all, there have been those in recent years who were known to me who, in the midst of a depressive darkness, yielded to the taking of their own lives.

I never had and still do not have the slightest grounds for doubting that they were the Lord’s children, truly converted and washed in the blood of the Lamb. I joined with others at their funerals and mourned over the despair they had wrestled with and which, in the end, prompted them to take the action they did.

We may and must deem the act as wrong but never lose a sense of compassion for them in the largely unknown struggle in which they were engaged, in some instances, for many, many years.

Nevertheless, it must never be thought that such compassion and such asserting that we believe them to have been truly saved in anyway exonerates suicide as a sin.

My second reason is a very recent email exchange I had with a brother who took me to task for a statement he read in my introduction to this sermon on SermonAudio. The statement he objected to was : “I say for most because suicide does not result in the damnation of the Christian who yields to that temptation.” You can read the statement and its context below.

Standing firm in the midst of a sinking world

bible_imageHaving therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come,” Acts 26:22.

(A message preached in Kilskeery Free Presbyterian Church by Rev Ivan Foster on 21st August 2004 and in Walsham Le Willows Congregational Church, 30th August 2015.)

This world has ever been sinking down morally since the entrance of sin. It is not a process that is limited to the closing years of this age as some might think. It is true that the moral decline will accelerate in the days of the rise of the Antichrist. This is stated clearly in such places as 2 Timothy 3:1. “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.”

But moral and spiritual decline has been an ongoing feature of every age. Its rate of decline may have varied throughout the ages but its inexorable continuance is undeniable.

“ALL CHRISTIANS TO ACTION STATIONS!! ”

roman_soldierAn outline study of Jude – an important little book for today, by Rev Ivan Foster.

Part 8: The believer, a vivid contrast in a day of apostasy

But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And of some have compassion, making a difference: and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh,” Jude 1:20-23.

The believer is ever to be a contrast to the worldling, but that contrast is never more obvious than in a day of darkness and apostasy. The stars are always shining in the heavens, but it is only when the sun sets that their presence becomes obvious!

So far in this epistle, Jude has stressed the character and nature of the enemy about whom he would warn us, the “certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ,” verse 4. In the four verses we wish to consider in this study, verses 20-23, the emphasis is upon the response of the believer to this wicked invasion.

Prayer Requested for New Nepal Constitution

Rev. & Mrs. Wesley Graham
Rev. & Mrs. Wesley Graham

At present the political parties in Nepal are debating a new constitution that includes anti-conversion laws and underscores decades-old religious tension. If ratified, the result could be a likely crackdown and severe persecution for dozens of Christian ministries serving there. It is feared that if this new constitution is adopted in its present draft form there could be great restriction on the freedom the Christians to share their faith with others.

The constitutional language in question states, “[…] any act which may be contrary to public health, public decency or morality or incitement to breach public peace or act to convert another person from one religion to another or any act or behaviour to undermine or jeopardize the religion of each other is not allowed and such act shall be punishable by law.”

The Nepalese government continues to seek input from its citizens before the Civic Relations and Constitution Recommendation Committee of the Constituent Assembly receives the final constitution draft on July 23. The government plans to finalize the constitution by mid-August. Violence erupted between police and protesters in southern Nepal when government officials held a public meeting to gain citizen input to the constitution, according to news reports from the region. The protesters threw chairs at the deputy prime minister.

This isolated country between India and China historically has been a Hindu nation, and most protesters are demanding a return to that status. Nepalese monarchs advocated Hinduism, and the people believed their monarchs were the reincarnation of Vishnu, a Hindu god.

Please pray that the government may adopt a constitution which allows Christians freedom to express and declare their faith

“The Frightening Prospect Facing the Cause of God in Ulster! ”

Jeremiah 12:7-11.

A sermon preached by Rev Ivan Foster in Newtownabbey FPC on Lord’s Day evening, 19th July, 2015.

Man is the same today as he was back in the times of the OT.

The Lord remains the same because, He is “infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in His being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth. ”

The sin of men today therefore brings the same response from the Lord as ever it did.
The analysis of man’s condition and the only cure given by the Lord was accurate a thousand years ago and more and remains effective still.

That being so, we can scan the future in the Bible’s records of the past. What happened to Israel following its backsliding and sin will likewise happen to the converted Gentiles today.

It is for this reason that we can look at these verses and see what lies ahead of Ulster’s Christians if there is not a taking heed of the lessons laid down for us. We may say with Paul: “for our sakes, no doubt, this is written, ” 1 Corinthians 9:10.

The consequences of backsliding and defiance of God is most terrible indeed! Hear what God says. “I have forsaken mine house, I have left mine heritage, ” Jeremiah 12:7-8.

The wonderful promise of Hebrews 13:5 must never be abused. That is not a promise without conditions. Disobedience of God is not ignored by Him.

The true believer will never be so wholly forsaken of God as to lose his soul but sin will cost us the presence and blessing of God just as it cost David such. Psalm 51:11-12.

That is the inevitable cost of sin in this life! Ulster’s Christians are facing a future void of these joys and blessings if there is not a heeding of the decline taking place amongst us.

The Greek crisis in the light of prophecy

greek-flag-burning-1 (1)The Book of Daniel was, like all Scripture, given for our instruction and edification. “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand,” Revelation 1:3. “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” Romans 15:4.

The Author of Daniel chapter 1 with its record of the stand taken by the young Hebrew captives against the attempts of the Babylonian king to have them conform to the ways of their captors, and of chapter 3, with its wonderful account of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego’s refusal to bow before the golden idol and their being cast into the fiery furnace, only to be miraculously preserved by the Lord, and chapter 5 with its rather chilling description of God’s mysterious written warning to Belshazzar which appeared on the wall of his palace during a wicked banquet, and chapter 6 where we have Daniel’s encounter with the lions in their den, is also the Author of chapters 7-8, 10-12 with their end-time prophecies. Read more

“ALL CHRISTIANS TO ACTION STATIONS!!”

roman_soldierAn outline study of Jude – an important little book for today.

By Rev Ivan Foster.

Part 6: Believers warned of the apostasy from the beginning

“And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him,” Jude 1:14-15.

Enoch would have preached while Adam was still alive. Therefore he was a man who preached to the earliest generations of men. It is clear that the end-time apostasy occupied the thoughts of the earliest believers. That in itself should cause Christians today to place a higher emphasis upon the study of what the Bible has to say about the end-times and the development of the lawlessness which the Bible consistently testifies will manifest itself just before the Saviour’s return. Read more

Mohammedanism: What Is It?

by E J Poole-Connor

islamAlthough this was written about 50 years ago, the information supplied by Mr Poole-Connor is useful in view of the present situation in the world.

(Taken from the introduction to the article in the Watching & Waiting magazine of the Sovereign Grace Advent Testimony, 2002)

In a day when the Prime Minister, Mr David Cameron, is so foolish and ignorant of history (willingly or otherwise) as to say that “Islam is a religion of peace” (Daily Telegraph, 26th June 2015) the following article, though some 60 years old, will prove enlightening and helpful to believers today.

Islam has not changed. The cruelty of the ISIS organisation is not new. That will be made clear in this well documented article. Read more….
