A national newspaper had this headline on Thursday 29 May, 2025.
Is THIS how the world will end? Scientists warn Earth could be flung out of orbit by a passing star – leaving humans to freeze to death
That is a conclusion born of a ‘super-charged deluded imagination’!
I have no doubt that they have no scientific basis for this ‘loony notion’!
The article informs us that: ‘For decades, scientists have pondered how the Earth could end.”
Scientists have not been alone in puzzling about the destiny of the earth. Unbelieving rejectors of the Word of God have been engaged in that folly since the ‘fall of Adam into sin’!
The article tells us who are the author’s of this ‘daftness’!
“In a new study, researchers from the Planetary Science Institute and the University of Bordeaux predict that Earth could be flung out of orbit by a passing star.
And without our Sun there to keep us warm, this would leave any inhabitants – including humans – to freeze to death.
Thankfully, the chances of this happening are very low.
Over the next five billion years, the chance of Earth being flung out of orbit by a passing star is around one in 500, according to the team.”
EARTH KNOCKED OFF COURSE!!!

God’s Purpose
God’s purpose for the earth will have been gloriously completed long before that date!!
We do have God’s Word on how things will be at the end of this present age and His future plans for the earth. There is no need for pondering and puzzling!
I. WE WILL START BY NOTING THAT THE LORD SAYS THAT HE CREATED THE EARTH!
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth,” Genesis 1:1.
These are the first words of the Bible, God’s revelation of His mind and will to mankind!
It being so prominently declared suggests that it is one of the first things God would have us to know.
It is not the hallucinatory notion of the evolutionist that supplies us with an answer to the oft-repeated question: ‘Where did it all come from?’ No, it is the Bible and it directs us immediately to the ‘Creator God’!
This truth is repeatedly set forth in the Word of God. It is a TRUTH that needs repeating generation after generation and that is the pattern we may observe in the Bible.
* “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it,” Exodus 20:11.
* “The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them,” Psalm 89:11.
* “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made . . . He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not,” John 1:3, 10.
* “And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands,” Hebrews 1:10.
The devil’s lie
Evolution flies in the face of these statements declaring the origins of all things.
It is this foul and stupid notion that is taught in every state school in Northern Ireland and to the children of many foolish Christian parents who for an incomprehensible and inexcusable reason, insist on sending their children to be taught this, and many other, lies of the devil.
II. THE LORD SOVEREIGNLY GOVERNS THE AFFAIRS OF THE WORLD FOR HIS GLORY.
The whole purpose of our existence is to the end that the Lord might be glorified.
“The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil,” Proverbs 16:4.
Things are NOT subject to ‘chance’ encounters with ‘wandering stars’! It is as the old chorus states it:
‘God is still on the throne’
Yes, there is mystery surrounding the existence of evil. Indeed the American Presbyterian theologian, A A Hodge (1823 – 1886), said that the origin of sin is an ‘inexplicable mystery’. We must not ever think of God as the author of sin for “The LORD our God is holy,” Psalm 99:9. “Art thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One? Habakkuk 1:12.
Angels
We do know that it originated amongst the angels with a rebellion led by Satan. He it was by his tempting of Eve and Adam, the first created human beings, who brought about sin’s entrance amongst mankind and which resulted in the utter depravity of mankind ever since.
The chaos, confusion and misery that has resulted from man’s fall into sin, and for which there is only one solution _— salvation by faith in the redeeming sacrifice of Christ at the cross — will one day be utterly put away and rebellious men judged and penalised eternally.
Incomprehensible
There are many things utterly beyond our present comprehension. Man can understand and will accept this with regards just about topic under heaven, except matters of eternal truth.
Man will give no argument to the scientist who is unable to answer a question about the stars or the far off regions of space, but he will stridently reject any statement suggesting that there are divine things, eternal matters or spiritual concepts that are just beyond the moral mind!
The lack of what man deems a ‘satisfactory’ answer to questions of a spiritual nature is evidence, as far as he is concerned, of proof that the Word of God is false and the gospel of Christ is to be rejected!
However, man is wrong and the outcome of all activities of the ages will cause humanity to see and understand that.
Humanity will one day say, to quote the response of those that brought a man for healing, who “was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech”, to Christ, upon seeing the miraculous healing, “He hath done all things well,” Mark 7:37.
There will be a day when, “At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father,” Philippians 2:10-11.
Paul so concisely defines the character of our understanding in this day. “For now we see through a glass darkly”. But a time is coming for the child of God that the veil will be lifted and “then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known,” 1 Corinthians 13:12.
As a child is limited in understanding of life’s affairs, so it is with us but a mature and full knowledge will be ours one day.
As Christ presently knows us, so we will know and possess to that extent a glorious knowledge of the purpose of God.
III. THE EARTH WILL NOT EVER BE DESTROYED!
“One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever,” Ecclesiastes 1:4.
Yes, there is ‘change and decay’ all around! But the earth will not cease to exist. That is the Lord’s clear declaration.
“Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth,” Psalm 119:90.
IV. BUT THE BIBLE TELLS US THAT GOD IN HIS INFINITE MERCY AND LOVE WILL PURGE THE EARTH OF THE CONTAMINATIONS BROUGHT ABOUT BY MAN’S SINS!
Consider these verses.
“Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end,” Psalm 102:25-27.
The word Hebrew word translated “perish” carries the meaning of ‘dying’. See Numbers 16:33 (see verse 41), 17:12; Jonah 1:6, 14, 3:9; Micah 7:2.
The same Hebrew word is also translated ‘destroyed’ and that too carries the meaning of dying. See Leviticus 23:30; Deuteronomy 4:26.
Death is not Annihilation!
Mankind is subject to ‘death’ but it does not mean that we cease to exist. For the redeemed there is a glorious future transformation!
“Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ,” 1 Corinthians 15:51-57.
“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent (go before) them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words,” 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18.
“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is,” 1 John 3:2.
As death for the Christian does not end their existence but rather brings them closer to that final and glorious transformation when we will be raised from the grave bearing the very likeness and glory of Christ, so it will be with the earth!
Yes, “Heaven and earth shall pass away,” Matthew 24:35, but remember that is the very phrase we use still of the death of friends and acquaintances!
Listen to Peter’s words.
“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless,” 2 Peter 3:10-14.
Out of the ‘melting’ and ‘dissolving’ will come forth a “new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.”
The matter is set forth in the last book of the Bible, the ‘Book of the Revelation’.
“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea,” Revelation 21:1.
This will be the final renovation of which all the ‘holy prophets’ spoke.
“And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began,” Acts 3:20-21.
Noah’s Flood
As the judgment of God in the days of Noah washed the earth from man’s pollutions by the world-wide flood, so at the end of time God will most thoroughly purge the fabric of the earth from every trace and element of sin and make it a ‘Garden of Eden’, a dwelling place for His redeemed ones.
Everything that causes suffering and pain and tears today will then cease to be.
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful,” Revelation 21:4-5.
However, the verse 8 reminds us that the ‘new earth’ is not for all people!
“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death,” Revelation 21:8.
The ‘Lake of Fire’ is the abode, the eternal dwelling place of the unsaved sinner.
If you, dear reader, are not converted but in your folly you have assumed that heaven would be your eternal portion when you die, please read these words!
“But the fearful, and unbelieving”! Fearing the laughter of the mocker, you have remained in a state of rejection. You have refused to believe what God has promised to the repentant, believing sinner. You are ‘named’ amongst this hapless assembly!
The gospel is found in Paul’s answer to the terrified Philippian jailer.
“Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house,”Acts 16:30-31.
The outcome of that exchange is given us: “And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house,” Acts 16:32-34.
The Lord Jesus said: “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.,” John 3:36.
The glorious earth, prepared by God for His people, will only be enjoyed by those that believe on Christ the Son God.
Believe on Him today and call upon His name, for “whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved,” Acts 2:21.
