GOG AND MAGOG - Attacks on Israel during the Millennial Reign of Christ - Part 1

Ezekiel chapters 38 & 39

I read these two chapters on October 5th & 6th. I have thought upon  these chapters now for quite a few years, as I come upon them every year in my reading through the Bible annually.

I can recall frequent discussions with my late wife, Ann, who was a very keen and knowledgeable student of Holy Scripture.

Myths

The names ‘Gog AND Magog’ have been surrounded by many myths, fancies and ostentatious notions as to their identity and that which they will be engaged in.

In truth, these two chapters in Ezekiel provide all that we need to know about them, given us of God by inspiration.

I. AS I HAVE STUDIED THESE CHAPTERS I BELIEVE THAT THEY REFER TO EVENTS IN THE MILLENNIAL REIGN OF CHRIST.

My reasons for coming to this conclusion are as follows.

1. The Bible reveals a wonderful time when Christ shall reign of the earth for 1000 years — His Millennial Reign.

The announcement of the beginning of that reign is given us in Revelation 12:15.

“And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”

The time when “The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord” is at the sounding of the “seventh angel.”

This is the sounding of the seventh trumpet. The sounding of that trumpet marks the end of this age.

“And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer: but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets,” Revelation 10:5-7.

2. It is a time in which Christ shall reign over all the earth with His redeemed.

“And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years,” Revelation 20:4.

Please note that the Lord repeats the number “a thousand years” six times in the verses 2-7. That ought to be enough for us to realise and understand that the Lord is referring to “a thousand years”!  It is rather egotistical of anyone to dare to replace that God inspired and repeated and emphasised period of time with a period of their own invention!

Symbolism

There is no indication in this passage that the Lord is using ‘symbolism’, as some would say! The respectful Bible student will simply take God at His Word and believe that this is truly a period of 1000 years!

3. It is that time when the promise of Christ, given in Matthew 5:5, will be fulfilled.

“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.” The word “inherit” literally means ‘obtain by inheritance.’ Click to read more…

THE LORD JESUS . . . a Pattern for us to Observe!

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds,” Hebrews 12:2-3.

Paul exhorts us to be “followers of God, as dear children,”Ephesians 5:1. The word “followers” in the Greek is mim-ay-tace. It is the word from which we get the English word ‘mimic’.

We can only imitate the Lord by constantly observing Him and reading the divine records of His words and ways. Thus Paul in our text urges upon us to ‘Look” unto the Lord Jesus, Who is God, and consider Him.

The two words, “look” and “consider” are very informative. The first one means to ‘to turn the eyes away from other things and fix them on Him.’ The second word means: ‘to think over, consider, ponder.’

The Psalmist gives us an illustration of just what it is Paul is urging upon us.

“But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night,” Psalm 1:2.

“My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips: When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches,”Psalm 63:5-6.

“My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD,” Psalm 104:34.

“I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches. I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word,” Psalm 119:14-16.

I wish to set forth the blessed truth that Christ, as He faced the fury of His enemies at the cross, at the close of His earthly ministry, presents to us a picture of that which those who would live and walk as He did, will face as this age draws to a close.

Pilate Washing his Hands, by Matthias Stomer (c.1600-1650)

1. From the beginning of His earthly sojourn, the Saviour faced the opposition and hated of evil men.

We are surely familiar with the scheming pretences of Herod as he enquired “diligently” (Matthew 2:1-8) of the wise men just when the ‘star’, that led them from the east, had first appeared. He claimed he wished to worship Him but it was murder he was planning!

“Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men,” Matthew 2:16.

The spirit of Herod is illustrative of the opposition the Saviour encountered during His three year ministry. Click to read more…

Studies in Ezekiel 28 - Part 3

Final  study — verses 20-26

ANTICHRIST JUDGED — ISRAEL DELIVERED!

“Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, set thy face against Zidon, and prophesy against it….

And there shall be no more a pricking brier unto the house of Israel, nor any grieving thorn of all that are round about them, that despised them; and they shall know that I am the Lord GOD. Thus saith the Lord GOD; When I shall have gathered the house of Israel from the people among whom they are scattered, and shall be sanctified in them in the sight of the heathen, then shall they dwell in their land that I have given to my servant Jacob. And they shall dwell safely therein, and shall build houses, and plant vineyards; yea, they shall dwell with confidence, when I have executed judgments upon all those that despise them round about them; and they shall know that I am the LORD their God,” verses 20-21, 24-26.

Tyrus, mentioned at the beginning of the chapter, and now Zidon, were ancient Phoenician cities, on the Mediterranean coast, north of Israel. They were shipping ports which gave access to the Mediterranean Sea for the commercial enterprises of ancient Babylon and will serve that purpose again for the final Antichrist.

Ezekiel was called upon to announce to Zidon the judgments that the Lord would heap upon her because of her sins. Those judgments were most terrible and the Lord will be ‘glorified’ and ‘sanctified’ by them.

Carnal man cannot understand how that could be so! But when the Lord displays His holy wrath against those who defy His laws and rule, He will be seen as faithful to His Word and will be seen, even by those being punished, as holy and just in His actions.

Scoff

Sinners may mock and scoff in the absence of judgment, but once it begins to fall, there will be an acknowledgment, amidst the horror, of the perfect righteousness of the justice of God.

As Paul states: “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God,” Romans 3:19.

Not one sinner will challenge the justice of God but will relent, unable to offer one excuse for their sin or dispute one iota of the sentence the Lord passes upon them! Every mouth will be stopped, or put to silence as the phrase may be translated. All will become guilty and acknowledge it to be so!

Moving on . . .

The subject the prophet is next given to declare is that which is ever linked throughout the Bible to the judgments of God upon ancient and future Babylon’s wicked empire,  that of the deliverance of the Jews, verses 24-26. Click to read more…

The ever increasing slide downward by the Free Presbyterian Church under its leadership in recent times!

What a shameful state of affairs has overtaken our church!

Folly rules, it seems, amongst our Presbytery office-bearers. Imprudence follows indiscretion and an arrogant ignoring of sin amongst our ranks is evident.

This attitude is largely born of ‘pride’, an unwillingness to acknowledge that the exposing of the blatant wrong-doing in recent times is correct and that they have been slack to dutifully act against that exposed!

Ezekiel

I am reading my way through the book of Ezekiel in my daily readings for I follow Robert Murray M‘Cheyne’s Bible Reading Calendar.

Today I read chapter 34. It is addressed to “the shepherds of Israel”. The Lord exposes and censures their failings to rightly look after His flock. Instead, the shepherds were moved by a self-seeking spirit and a looking after themselves!

Comfort and Condemnation

What comfort is offered to the neglected sheep — verses 11-16. The Lord will see that they are properly treated and cared for.

On the other hand, what condemnation is heaped upon the failing shepherds!

“‭As‭ I live‭, saith‭ the Lord‭ GOD‭, surely because my flock‭ became a prey‭, and my flock‭ became meat‭ to every beast‭ of the field‭, because ‭there was‭ no shepherd‭‭, neither did my shepherds‭‭ search‭‭ for my flock‭, but the shepherds‭‭ fed‭‭ themselves, and fed‭‭ not my flock‭;‭ ‭therefore, O ye shepherds‭‭, hear‭‭ the word‭ of the LORD‭;‭ ‭Thus saith‭‭ the Lord‭ GOD‭; Behold, I ‭am‭ against the shepherds‭‭; and I will require‭‭ my flock‭ at their hand‭, and cause them to cease‭‭ from feeding‭‭ the flock‭; neither shall the shepherds‭‭ feed‭‭ themselves any more; for I will deliver‭‭ my flock‭ from their mouth‭, that they may not be meat‭ for them,‭”‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ verses 8-10.

That which begins with foolish and selfish carelessness ends with the severest judgment of God following upon those who acted contrary to the welfare of God’s flock.

That is something the pulpits of the Free Presbyterian Church should carefully note and take heed of! Click to read more…

Studies in Ezekiel 28 - Part 2

Second study — verses 11-19

THE POWER BEHIND THE ANTICHRIST

“‭Son‭ of man‭, take up‭‭ a lamentation‭ upon the king‭ of Tyrus‭, and say‭‭ unto him, Thus saith‭‭ the Lord‭ GOD‭; Thou sealest up‭‭ the sum‭, full‭ of wisdom‭, and perfect‭ in beauty‭.‭ ‭Thou hast been in Eden‭ the garden‭ of God‭; every precious‭ stone‭ ‭was‭ thy covering‭, the sardius‭, topaz‭, and the diamond‭, the beryl‭, the onyx‭, and the jasper‭, the sapphire‭, the emerald‭, and the carbuncle‭, and gold‭: the workmanship‭ of thy tabrets‭ and of thy pipes‭ was prepared‭‭ in thee in the day‭ that thou wast created‭‭,‭”‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ Ezekiel 28:12-13.

I believe that the ‘prince’ referred to in verses 1-10 is a different personage from the ‘king’ mentioned in this second section of the chapter.

There are as many theories as to who is referred to here, as there are Bible Commentators!

I suggest that the ‘prince’ was the earthly, human leader and ruler of Tyrus BUT the ‘king’ was a personage much greater and more powerful than the ‘prince’.

In this matter I give my opinion, but I stand ever ready to be corrected.

THE KING OF TYRE IS THE DEVIL.

1. I believe the ‘king‭ of Tyrus‬’ to be the devil!

He is the ‘power’ behind the ‘prince of Tyrus’, whose name was, I believe, ‘Ethbaal’. In him was to be found all the wicked and blasphemous ambitions that will reach their fulness in the final Antichrist.

Sermon and Deeds of the Antichrist, by Luca Signorelli (1450–1523). Fresco, 1499. Note the devil whispering into the ear of Antichrist, and the haughty and wicked actions of the listening crowd.

If the ‘prince of Tyrus’ is indeed a foreshadowing of the future Antichrist — as I believe he is — the ‘king of Tyrus’ is a picture of the ‘higher power’ behind the future Antichrist, Satan!

Description

Much of the description given us by the Lord of the person of the ‘king of Tyrus’, goes far beyond that of the limits of a mere mortal. The verses 12-19 may, I believe, only be applied to the devil. Click to read more…
