Foreshadowing of the future – a warning for the EU

A message preached by Dr. John Douglas, in which he expounds the Bible’s teaching on the development of the kingdom of the Antichrist and the role that the European Union will play in that development.

We would ask our friends who do not share in our view of prophecy – premillennialism – to give serious consideration to this message.

The Return of Christ – Pre-millennial

dawnby Rev Ivan Foster

(This message was given at the first meeting of 2000 of the Sovereign Grace Advent Testimony in London.)

“And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever” (Daniel 2:44).

When it comes to the study of prophecy, this subject is a very elementary one, yet it is a subject to which many give little thought. Many Christians have a general view of the return of Christ, that it is going to happen, but they are not well versed on what the Bible has to say about that glorious event. That ought not to be. It is a subject with which God’s people should be well acquainted.

It is clear from the Word of God that the Christians in the days of the apostles were very well taught about the return of Christ. Indeed, when Paul wrote to the Thessalonians, he said he needed hardly to write on this subject as they knew about it perfectly (1 Thessalonians 5:2). It could be thought that those early believers would have had to learn so many subjects; that they were to be taught in doctrine of which they never had the slightest knowledge before the gospel came to them. Paul would have had to deal with the doctrine of God, His Person, His power, the mystery of the Trinity, and the inspiration of God’s Word. Although there was so much to teach, the apostle found time to tell those early believers about the second coming of the Lord and of the end times. Many ministers today would speak as if Paul had so much else to proclaim, that teaching about the return of Christ and the doctrine of eschatology could be left to a later generation. Read more or listen using the player below.

Digging wells for our children to drink from.

well_bucket(A message preached at a teachers’ day of prayer in Portadown FPC, May 14th, 2016, by Rev Ivan Foster.)

“And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them,” Gen 26:18

This portion of God’s Word is illustrative of the ongoing struggle that each succeeding generation of believers must engage, in if they are to enjoy the benefits of the covenant of grace.

That which ensures that there is an ongoing struggle is the unchanging enmity of the enemies of God’s people. Conquered by one generation of believers, they will rise up to challenge the next. Isaac found this to be so. “The Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham”.

Here in Ulster, the establishing and successfully running of independent Christian schools is central to that ongoing struggle.

I wish to apply this portion of God’s Word to that aspect of God’s work in Ulster today. Read more

A word from prisoner number 1425

An article by Rev. Ivan Foster (Written for a ‘pre-digital’ edition of The Burning Bush shortly after a third spell in jail in April 1986)

Rev. Ivan Foster was arrested at his church in Kilskeery in Co. Tyrone on Monday 21 April (1986) and taken to Crumlin Road Jail to serve a sentence of 14 days for refusing to pay a fine imposed upon him for his part in a protest against the R.U.C. carrying out Dublin’s orders to ban the Protestant parade in Castlewellan last July (1985). With full remission of sentence, and, because the Prison does not have weekend releases, Mr. Foster was set free on Friday 25 April. Read more

The benefits of having the Bible

bible_image[The slightly enlarged substance of a message preached in Kilskeery Free Presbyterian Church, 31st March 1991 by the then minister, Rev Ivan Foster.
At the service Bibles were distributed to the children of the congregation to mark the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Free Presbyterian Church on March 17th 1951.]

“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple,” Psalm 119:130.

As a church we revere the Bible. It is given a prominent place in our services and in our lives. We preach its doctrines and contend for its truths. To mark the fortieth year of our church we can think of no better memento to give to our children than a copy of the Bible.
The word BIBLE comes from a Greek word BIBLOS = The BOOK. This is the BOOK for us in Kilskeery. We hope it will become the BOOK of all the children and young people here tonight. Read moreor listen using the player below.

NEW BOOK: Encounters with Christ

Encounter_cover_croppedimage“Encounters with Christ”, by Ann Foster, is a Bible-based record of some notable miracles of healing wrought by the Saviour during His earthly ministry. He healed multitudes, giving sight to the blind, casting out devils, cleansing the lepers, causing the lame to walk, the deaf to hear, the maimed to be whole, the palsied to recover and imparting life to the dead. These miracles were always accompanied by earnest prayer, a consciousness of need and faith on the part of the one who sought healing. They also illustrate vital gospel truth. Sinners are spiritually blind, controlled by Satan, unclean, lame, maimed, paralysed and dead as a result of sin and they desperately need the spiritual healing and deliverance which Christ alone can give. They too must come with a deep consciousness of their sin, earnestly seeking salvation and believing that Christ alone can save.

The book also details some notable conversations with individuals. Again gospel truth is illustrated. In the Lord’s conversation with the woman of Samaria, He revealed to her the depth of her iniquity and His identity as the Messiah. The sinner must realise and acknowledge his sin in the eyes of a holy God and recognise Christ as God’s only anointed Saviour. In His conversation with Nicodemus, He stressed the necessity of the new birth even for a self- righteous sinner, spoke of His death on the cross, using the symbol of the uplifted serpent in the wilderness, to secure eternal life for His people.

However, not all who were healed were saved. Some, like Malchus, accepted healing for his severed ear, but rejected Christ’s message. Not all who talked with Christ, like the rich, young ruler, heeded His instruction to leave all and follow Him if he wished to obtain eternal life. Mercifully, Nicodemus was born again, despite all appearances to the contrary, for we find him at the cross with Joseph of Arimathea, carefully removing Christ’s body, wrapping it in spices and fine linen, laying it in the tomb and rolling the stone to the door.

Editor’s correspondence with ‘Father’ Patrick McCafferty

Pastor James McConnell and the RC priest Patrick McCafferty with whom he is most friendly
Pastor James McConnell and the RC priest Patrick McCafferty with whom he is most friendly

Back in 2002, I entered into a correspondence in the pages of “The Burning Bush” with a Roman Catholic priest from Belfast. The correspondence arose after I wrote a letter in reply to an article by the priest in “The Belfast Telegraph” of August 24th, 2002.

I was grieved at such a platform being given to the errors and deceptions of Rome and commented on the priest’s article in a letter to “The Belfast Telegraph.”

It will be noted how our two replies to the priest were edited by the ‘Letters Editor’ of “The Belfast Telegraph” before they quickly closed the exchange after two exchanges.

The Word of God was not liked by that ecumenical newspaper back then and it is still the case. Every effort was made to shield and protect the priest of Rome from the rebuke of God’s Word.

We are republishing the correspondence, which continued for eight exchanges, and appeared in “The Burning Bush” from October 2002 until May 2003, because of the publicity given to the ‘warm relationship’ that was manifested between this priest and Pastor James McConnell during the recent trial occasioned by Pastor McConnell’s pulpit statements about Islam. Pastor McConnell asked ‘Father’ Patrick McCafferty to speak on his behalf during the trial.

All this “ecumenical camaraderie” between the pastor and the priest may appear to some to give endorsement of the teachings of Rome and it is for this reason we highlight again the errors this priest, like all Roman Catholic clerics, propagates.

Needless to say, it also highlights the folly of James McConnell!

Read Part 5 of the exchange here.

Giving their Kingdoms to the Beast – The Present and Future Course of European Nations

Roman_Empire_Trajan_117ADby Rev. Brian McClung

For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled, Revelation 17:17

Leaving aside the particular details of what David Cameron has negotiated, or not, one overriding truth is very evident, namely, that there is a continuing desire among European nations for the centralising of power. Keeping also in mind that the reality of what has been negotiated will be somewhat different to the ‘spin’ that the Prime Minister and his spin doctors will present to the electorate over coming days, this desire to centralise power will not be given up easily or willingly.

Election of the new moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland

PCI_moderator_2016
Rev. Frank Sellar

An insight into the moral state of that denomination

“O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned,” Matthew 12:34-37.

At this time of the year, the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, an ecumenical denomination which long has had cordial links to Rome and the other international bodies that make up modern apostate Christendom, holds its annual election to choose the next Moderator of its General Assembly.

Normally, in order to maintain tranquility within its ranks, the office alternates between one who is clearly an ecumenist/liberal and one who is not quite so clearly an evangelical with the emphasis on the ‘jelly’ as Dr Paisley used to say in his heyday! Read more

UNBELIEF and understanding prophecy

bible_image“Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself,” Luke 24:25-27.

I was speaking with a friend the other day about the whole business of prophecy and the opposition mounted against the position held by those of us who simply believe, quite literally, what the Bible teaches about the last days and the return of Christ. In our discussion, I referred to the scene on the “Road to Emmaus” when the two despondent disciples were confronted by the Lord Jesus. As we talked it occurred to me that the Saviour put His finger on the cause of the difficulties the disciples were having with the events surrounding the Saviour’s death and resurrection. He said to them : “O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.” Read more

Rome propagates the devil’s lie ever more brazenly

RC Priest Brian D'Arcy
RC Priest Brian D’Arcy

by Rev Ivan Foster

The British press has been filled with the news of the death of well-known television and radio personality, Sir Terry Wogan. He was born a Roman Catholic in Limerick, in the Irish Republic, in 1938 but he moved to England after a time working for RTE (Raidió Teilifís Éireann) as a newsreader and announcer to work for the BBC in the1960’s. He quickly became a household name, branching into television where he hosted many programmes.

As is invariably the case, there was a rush of people to say how well they knew him, how close they were to him etc, etc. One of those who did so was a Roman Catholic priest from Co. Fermanagh. His name is Brian D’Arcy.

A report of what D’Arcy had to say was given in the “Belfast Telegraph” of January 31st, 2016. The report carried the headline: “Terry Wogan was an atheist but spiritual, says Father Brian D’Arcy”

Why we should love the Jewish people

auschwitzHolocaust Memorial Day 2016.

The substance of two school morning assembly messages given in Kilskeery Independent Christian School, by retired minister and school administrator, Rev Ivan Foster, on 27th and 28th January

“Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: and I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: and I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed,” Genesis 12:1-3.

It is clear from the first words spoken to Abraham, from whom sprang the Jewish people, that he and his descendants would be those about whom there would a division of opinions. There would be those that would “bless” them and there would be those who would “curse” them!

Those that “bless” them would be blessed of God and those that “cursed” them would be cursed of God.

They were, in heaven’s eyes, a very special people….Read more

Read Part 2 of the exchange here.

Future developments in Iraq

The substance of a message preached in Kilskeery Free Presbyterian Church, Lord’s Day evening, 10th March, 1991 by Rev Ivan Foster.

There are basically two schools of thought regarding what the Bible has to say about the future of the ancient city of Babylon.

There has been a city of Babylon from the very earliest times. “And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.” Genesis 10:10
“So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.” Genesis 11:8-9.

It became a city of great prominence in the time of Nebuchadnezzar. It, rather than Nineveh, became the city of Assyria. The city is now in ruins.

Suicide – a despairing leap into the dark.

Two things have prompted me to mount these notes which are the substance of a sermon I preached in Kilskeery Free Presbyterian Church on March 16th, 2008.

First of all, there have been those in recent years who were known to me who, in the midst of a depressive darkness, yielded to the taking of their own lives.

I never had and still do not have the slightest grounds for doubting that they were the Lord’s children, truly converted and washed in the blood of the Lamb. I joined with others at their funerals and mourned over the despair they had wrestled with and which, in the end, prompted them to take the action they did.

We may and must deem the act as wrong but never lose a sense of compassion for them in the largely unknown struggle in which they were engaged, in some instances, for many, many years.

Nevertheless, it must never be thought that such compassion and such asserting that we believe them to have been truly saved in anyway exonerates suicide as a sin.

My second reason is a very recent email exchange I had with a brother who took me to task for a statement he read in my introduction to this sermon on SermonAudio. The statement he objected to was : “I say for most because suicide does not result in the damnation of the Christian who yields to that temptation.” You can read the statement and its context below.

Standing firm in the midst of a sinking world

bible_imageHaving therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come,” Acts 26:22.

(A message preached in Kilskeery Free Presbyterian Church by Rev Ivan Foster on 21st August 2004 and in Walsham Le Willows Congregational Church, 30th August 2015.)

This world has ever been sinking down morally since the entrance of sin. It is not a process that is limited to the closing years of this age as some might think. It is true that the moral decline will accelerate in the days of the rise of the Antichrist. This is stated clearly in such places as 2 Timothy 3:1. “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.”

But moral and spiritual decline has been an ongoing feature of every age. Its rate of decline may have varied throughout the ages but its inexorable continuance is undeniable.

“ALL CHRISTIANS TO ACTION STATIONS!! ”

roman_soldierAn outline study of Jude – an important little book for today, by Rev Ivan Foster.

Part 8: The believer, a vivid contrast in a day of apostasy

But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And of some have compassion, making a difference: and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh,” Jude 1:20-23.

The believer is ever to be a contrast to the worldling, but that contrast is never more obvious than in a day of darkness and apostasy. The stars are always shining in the heavens, but it is only when the sun sets that their presence becomes obvious!

So far in this epistle, Jude has stressed the character and nature of the enemy about whom he would warn us, the “certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ,” verse 4. In the four verses we wish to consider in this study, verses 20-23, the emphasis is upon the response of the believer to this wicked invasion.
