Bright and shining lights in the Bible #2

As I said at the end of last week’s study, we are going to return to what Romans 15:4 says. “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”
Studying the histories of good and godly men and women in the Bible – plus youngsters such as Samuel the boy and the little maid of 2 Kings 5 – will benefit us greatly.

Firstly, we will ‘learn’. First use of the word, Matt 15:9. The word means ‘teaching or learning’. It is the only book which will ONLY impart knowledge and wisdom to you. “O God, thou hast taught me from my youth, Psalm 71:17.
The Bible contains what we are to learn to obey.

It is a knowledge which will take us to heaven. 2 Tim 3:15.

Bright and shining lights in the Bible #1

#1: John the Baptist, Pt1.

The Lord Jesus said of John the Baptist that “He was a burning (old-fashioned beacon) and a shining light,” John 5:35.

He was like a lighthouse, a man who sounded forth warnings about the dangers men faced and marked out the way to safety in the Lord Jesus Christ. “John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world,” John 1:29.
John the Baptist was not the only burning and shining light. The Lord sent many such men into the world.

We are going to look at some of them in our Friday morning assemblies. They were called ‘burning lights’ because a fire burned within them. Psalm 39:2.

Do remember: “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope,” Romans 15:4. We can learn from those like John.

The histories of good men and women are recorded in the Bible for 3 reasons.

That we might learn. That we might patiently bear with life’s trials. That we might have hope.

We will come back to this next Friday in the will of the Lord.
