(Some opening comments on the protest against the blasphemous, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, play in Newry and also the news of the murder of 40 Muslims in New Zealand.)

We are continuing to consider the Saviour’s explanation for rewarding His sheep.
His rewards are for the care and love they have shown Him through their kindness toward fellow believers.

As has already been said: It indicates a watchfulness regarding the affairs of Christ. His name and honour and the well-being of His saints are ever uppermost in the hearts of true believers.

We have examples of such living. “And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, and Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance,” Luke 8:2-3. This was what happened in the days of the Saviour here on earth.

Such watchfulness and care continued after His ascension.

“I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: that ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also,” Romans 16:1-2.

“Succourer” comes from a word meaning to ‘rule or set over.’ She felt a burden and responsibility to look after others!

We are considering the Saviour’s explanation for rewarding His sheep.

“For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me,” verses 35-36.

Note, everything the Christian does is for Christ. “For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat, etc.”

Paul said: “For to me to live is Christ,” Php 1:21. This what ALL Christians should say! Our sole aim in living should be to glorify Christ. He is the supreme End and Purpose of our life.

It indicates a watchfulness regarding the affairs of Christ. Love and concern for the people of God marks the life of the true believer.

THE SAVIOUR EXPLAINS WHY HE IS REWARDING HIS SHEEP.

“For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me,” verses 35-36.

These words do not set down WHY they gained heaven, but rather is descriptive of their characters and how they lived, and are testimonies and evidences of the grace of God in them. Here is proof that they were the blessed of His Father, having His special grace bestowed upon them and that they were the children of God.

We do not get to heaven by our works! This is the devil’s lie and is the foundation of all false religions. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast,” Ephesians 2:8-9.
