II. THIS BOAZ WAS A NOTABLE MAN

When we glean the information given us here we discover a wonderful type of our Saviour.

1. He was the neglected, rejected redeemer. Boaz could have helped Elimelech in his earlier time of distress (1:1-2) but he was overlooked or rejected.

2. He was a man with a wonderful name. A true meaning for the Hebrew form of his name cannot be given, I understand. It is only when the Greek form of his name (Matt 1:5, Luke 3:32) is considered that a meaning can be offered — “In him is strength.”  There is a mystery about Christ, Judges 13:18. “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory,” 1 Timothy 3:16. It is in the New Testament we are given a full revelation of the Lord. “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” John 1:14. In Him is strength and deliverance.

3. He was a man of great wealth. So it is with Christ. Famine will not hurt Him or any that look to Him. Psalm 81:13-16; 147:12-14.

We are here introduced to one of the principal characters of the book of Ruth — Boaz.

It is through him that Ruth enters upon a prosperous and secure life and becomes one of the progenitors of the Lord Jesus.

I. AT THE BEGINNING OF HER NEW LIFE IN JUDAH, A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP WITH BOAZ BEGINS

So it is with every true believer.

1. It is in his fields that Ruth finds sustenance.

2. It is under his eye that she finds protection. 2:8-9.

3. It is through intimate union with him that she finds everlasting honour. Had not Ruth married Boaz, we would even know her name today. It is union with Christ that will bring us to honour. “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light,” 1 Peter 2:9. Deut 26:19; 1 Sam 2:7-9.

IV. NOTE GOD’S WISE AND WONDERFUL TIMING
“ . . and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest,” verse 22.

1. It was Spring time. The land was at its most beautiful. “The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land,” Song of Solomon 2:12.

2. It was barley harvest time. The report Naomi heard was true, verse 6. All that God says of the blessings awaiting the repentant is true.

3. It was the beginning of barley harvest. There was much more of God’s mercy and grace to come.
